Design Retreat: Gowanus Print Lab

Dan Sullivan
Director of Design

For our most recent outing, the Design Team wanted to find an activity that got us out of the office and into an entirely different creative setting. We pondered a few ideas, but ultimately landed on screen printing as a great way to extend our team’s creativity. Many of us come from a purely digital background, so getting our hands dirty with ink and fabric was a welcomed break from staring at our monitors.

Tyler Shick, our Senior Product Designer, came up with an idea to split us into teams and create four separate print designs. Over the course of a few weeks, we iterated our concepts and shared progress with each other during our weekly design team meeting. Once we were satisfied, we sent our designs over to the Gowanus Print Lab where they prepped the screens for our arrival.

The team had a great time learning about printing techniques and being guided through the process from beginning to end. Our four designs were printed on dozens of T-shirts, totes, and poster paper, and we got to experiment with a few multi-color prints as well.

One of the defining factors of our team that makes us work so well together is our emphasis on collaboration. Seeing this core value applied to a different medium, and in a different environment, was extremely valuable and rewarding for us. Watch the video below for a glimpse into our outing:
